In September 1981, she began the M.S. program in Mathematics at North Carolina State University specializing in linear and matrix algebra and operations research. She taught 2 sessions of calculus each semester as a graduate teaching assistant. Her excellence in teaching was rewarded in 1983 by receipt of a North Carolina State University Teaching Award for Mathematics Instruction while also completing her thesis regarding the use of QR algorithms for matrices. Upon graduation with the M.S. degree in Applied Mathematics and Operations Research in 1984, she began her career at IBM Corporation in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina as a Network Management Software Developer. In September 1994, she was promoted to develop an intranet web page for marketing representatives and business partners allowing access to the IBM Super System Demonstration tool. During the last two years of her tenure at IBM, she developed, supported, and presented AIX and OS/2 Network Management product demos for special bid customers, Fortune 500 executives and for trade shows. In addition, she integrated an OS/2 SNMP Network Management product (Netview for OS/2) into an existing LAN Demo CD and developed demonstration scenarios for this project. Upon leaving IBM, Carla started KM, Limited of Virginia Beach, VA, a software and engineering consulting firm specializing in the merging of activity based costing with life cycle assessment. In addition to managing all CEO responsibilities, she developed the LCAPIX software tool with PowerBuilder V 4.0 and 5.0 for a Fortune 500 company. She wrote, tested and documented this application. Also, she wrote the Patent specifications for this patented product. She was the technical advisor and instructional designer for a local Virginia Beach private school. She supervised all aspects of IT responsibilities for the school. The work required communicating technological responsibilities to Administrators, Board Memebers and Software and Technology Committees. Other consulting duties included educating teachers and staff on all aspects of software and web development, streamlining office administration functions, evaluating all new software tools, and database administration of the Blackbaud Education, Accounting and Development (SQL) database.
